Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on January 15, 1908, on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. It is the oldest Greek letter organization established by African American college-educated women. It was founded by a group of twenty young women, which consisted of nine seniors and juniors, seven sophomores, and four incorporators. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was incorporated on January 29, 1913, and now consists of more than 380,000 initiated members in more than 1,096 graduate and undergraduate chapters across 13 nations and territories.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on a mission of five basic tenets that have remained unchanged. Our mission is:

  • to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards,
  • to promote unity and friendship among college women,
  • to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature,
  • to maintain a progressive interest in college life,
  • and to be of “Service to All Mankind.”

The Eta Psi Chapter was chartered on October 27, 1973, by sixteen women affectionately known as the sweet sixteen. On January 27, 1973, the first pre-chartered line consisted of two AKA interest group originators as graduating seniors, Mary Jordan and Patricia Watkins. The AKA interest group was created by Patricia Watkins who recruited fellow students who were interested in an AKA chapter. Many hours of hard work, perseverance, and love poured into the creation of the Eta Psi Chapter.

Today, the Eta Psi Chapter is committed to service and sisterhood through following Alpha Kappa Alpha’s six program initiatives. The six initiatives are:

  • Strengthen our Sisterhood
  • Empower our Families
  • Build our Economic Wealth
  • Enhance our Environment
  • Advocate for Social Justice
  • Uplift our Local Community

These initiatives are designed to improve the lives and communities of those we serve. We strengthen our sisterhood by intentionally taking time to fellowship and form lifelong relationships while building our foundation to serve others. We empower our families because we understand that a healthy family is the foundation of a healthy community. We build economic wealth to encourage and equip our members to place key strategies to build personal, organizational, and community economic wealth. We enhance our environment by grasping the power through our 120,000 active members to make a significant impact on our environment. We advocate for social justice by standing in the gap to empower our communities and act in the best interests of all people through social advocacy and justice. Finally, we uplift our local community by celebrating excellence, and promoting a focus on service, effective culture, and showcasing our best practices.
